Area Description:
Darland Wood covers approximately 45 hectares. It is home to many rare butterflies and plants and is also home to a small herd of rare breed cattle. Darland Wood has chalk grassland, scrub and woodland on steep scarp slopes.

Best times to visit:
Sping and summer for insects and flowers and autumn for grassland fungi.
Key Flora:
Man Orchid, Pyramidal Orchid, Fragrant Orchid, Wild Marjoram, Kidney Vetch, Field Scabious, Black Knapweed, Red Star Thistles, as well as a wide host of other grassland flowers can be seen throughout the year. Timothy Grass, Upright Brome and Red Fescue can also be seen.

Key Fauna:
Butterflies are represented by Marbled White, Chalkhill Blue, Adonis Blue, Common Blue, Brown Argus, Ringlet, Speckled Wood, Meadow Brown, Gatekeeper, Green Hairstreak, Large & Small Skippers and Peacock amongst others.
Roe Deer are present as well as Common Toads.
Glow Worms, Roesells Bush Cricket, Great Green Bush Cricket, Common Field Grasshopper, Straw Belle, Treble Bar, Yellow Shell, Beautiful Carpet, Common Heath, Fox Moth, 6 Spot Burnet and Nemophora deegerella are among other insects that can be seen. Brown Banded Carder Bumblebees have been recorded.
Grass Snake, Adder & Common Lizard, Hobby and Green Woodpeckers aplenty.
